Sleep apnea symptoms: Snoring

If you have someone who knows what you sound like when you sleep, consider yourself thankful. The “easy” warning signs of sleep apnea are far easier to pick out if there’s someone on the outside looking in while you’re trying to get sleep.

The easiest of the easy symptoms is snoring.  Snoring is:

[a] [h]arsh buzzing noise produced by a sleeper, produced primarily with inspiration due to vibration of the soft palate and pillars of oropharyngeal inlet …

Basically, breathing is partially obstructed by tissue in the throat area, and as the air goes by, that tissue vibrates and makes noise. The vibration is the (very fast) opening and closing of the airway.

Snoring by itself does not imply the existence of sleep apnea, but it indicates the presence of obstruction that can develop into obstructive sleep apnea.

If you don’t have someone regularly listening to you sleep, then try getting a sound recorder.  (My wife did this, and I don’t really think that I believed her until she played the recording for me. :) )

Shaq has sleep apnea

Shaq and I have the same birthdate, and we both have sleep apnea too!

He’s a lot better-looking, though. ;)

Allergies and CPAP don’t mix well

Pollen really gets to me.  The yellow powder knocks me for a loop, makes my eyes itchy, and gives me the sniffles.

I’m glad this only lasts a little while each year, because it’s making using the CPAP mask more difficult.  Not a fun time.  Less mask time means less good sleep and a fuzzier head throughout the day.

The mask itself isn’t bad, but with other irritants floating around, it’s a challenge.  Back to normal after pollen season. :)

OK, I think I remember what a bluebird looks like

My wife has a hypothesis.  (Since I married a smart woman, I listen to her hypotheses.  Once in a while. :) )

When I heard people talk about the “immediate” difference that using the constant positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine, I suppose I expected that this meant “the next day.”

The first couple of nights weren’t bad, per se, but Mr. Bluebird wasn’t on my shoulder when I woke up, that was for dang sure.  Maybe it was the fact that I was only using the machine for five to six hours the first couple of nights and would take the mask off before I was completely ready to get up for the day.  Or maybe it was the fact that it shouldn’t be an instantaneous change.  I had thought that recovering from sleep deprivation was just about instantaneous, but there may be some kind of cumulative “memory effect”, meaning that I’d need to get good sleep for a while before my body forgot that I was getting bad sleep.  Or, possibly, it could have been simply that I was getting over the flu.

Anyway, I had the mask on for over seven hours last night, and I did notice that I felt better when I finally got up.  Three days is still pretty quick to see a difference, I guess.  That, and getting a full night’s sleep is also probably part of the solution.  The mask won’t magically turn five hours of sleep into a clicking-my-heels good day.

Waking to the sound of a growling dog

Yesterday I managed to keep the CPAP treatement going for over 5 1/2 hours.  And I didn’t even throw the machine across the room!  So my first night was successful.

My ResMed S8 Escape™ II is quiet and easy to use so far. I have a Quattro™ FX mask made by the same company.  I’m pretty sure the mask was a little different than the one that was used with my second sleep study, but not a whole lot.  It covers both my mouth and nose.  Another friend who is getting treated has a nose-only treatment, which means that he has to keep his mouth shut while he’s sleeping.

Since I’m getting over a cold, I probably didn’t notice feeling a whole lot better after using the CPAP machine for the first time.  Those that I have talked to have said that it makes a world of difference in the quality of sleep right from the start.  A bit like partying, or waking up to the sound of bluebirds every morning.

I definitely didn’t hear the bluebirds this morning.  What I did hear, though, was a dog. Our dog, and she was growling at me.  She wanted to know who this person was in bed with her mommy, and what that thing connected to his head that was hissing at her.

The CPAP mask has officially spooked my beagle mutt.

But I shall endure my dog’s bravado once again tonight.

Welcome to my journey towards a good night’s sleep

I’m a guy in my late thirties with a wonderful family, and for (probably) years I’ve been getting mediocre sleep because of obstructive sleep apnea.

I was diagnosed about a month ago, and got my constant positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine today.  If I can get through my first night without throwing the thing across the room, I’ll consider it successful.  :)

My hope for this diary is to provide first-hand beginner “A-Team” knowledge for people who are dealing with sleep apnea, or who think they may have sleep apnea.

Off to bed with me!  I’ll report back with how it went.
